Review of Seasons 1 through 3

My expert DW viewer thought I should take a moment to compare the three seasons that I have seen.  I think that Season 3 has improved since Season 2, and Season 3 has greatly improved from Season 1.

I feel as though there has been a steady and subtle change in the Doctor's attitude.  He wasn't altruistic, kind, or proactive in the beginning, and I think he has all those traits now.

Some people have doubted that I would get through all these recons. I doubted it, too.  I know I've ranted and screamed about them for some time now, but they weren't impossible to sit through.  As I have said before, I've always had a fondness for radio shows.

Of course it's all about the plots.  Some of these plots have been good, some mediocre, and some completely appalling.  And when you have recons along with a really bad plot, things just sort of go downhill really fast.

It's a shame that all there are so many missing episodes.  I'm not saying that The Web Planet would improve if it weren't in recons. In fact, it might make it worse, if that's even possible.  But it's a crying shame because you can tell that the creators of Doctor Who put a lot of effort in their show, and you can't really drum up that appreciation when you're staring at a picture of the Doctor's mouth over and over again.

I have a small amount of DW trivia in my brain, so I know that William Hartnell will be leaving soon, though I don't know the specifics or when it will happen.  I will be sad to see him go, though I'm ready to move on to another personality.  Once I am done with Hartnell, I will watch the live documentary: Adventures in Time and Space. At least it won't be in reconstructions.

I've built up an affection for William Hartnell, which I can't believe I'm saying as I type this.  In terms of best character development, I feel as though Hartnell has changed the most.

Eccleston, Tennant and Smith have all been great doctors. I've liked them all.  But they are already fantastic when they are presented. Sure, Eccleston was a little dark and angry, Tennant was always the rake, and Smith really knew how to work that screwdriver, but they were all the same: fantastic, energetic, god-like and reliable.  Hartnell was never reliable, he was always stammering and letting others take the fall.  He was the opposite of god-like and he certainly is not energetic.

This gives me a different view of the Doctor, and I like it.  We shouldn't always have characters that are perfect in every way. No one is like that in real life.  There are certain things that have turned me off with the new series, like the "I'm a Time Lord and will destroy you if you touch my women" kind of thing.  Or the dependency on a female character to get things done. All this makes me appreciate the classic Doctor Who just a little bit more.

I've probably bored you will all my ramblings, but I look forward to more Doctor Who.

And I'll try to be open minded about it as I possibly can.

Oh look, more stupid recons.  I take that back.

P.S. My expert Doctor Who viewer, after reading this, gently pointed out to me that The Web Planet was in fact not a recon.  Embarrassed as I am at this mistake, it is slightly funny that I remembered it being a recon when it was not.  Does my opinion of this episode change?  Not the slightest.  Hang that episode!
