1.7 The Sensorites
Ah, the Sensorites....
Some say this episode is the worst ever, but I didn't find it particularly worse than any of the others I've seen. Like the Edge of Destruction? How do we want to rate that one a horrific boredom scale of one to ten?
Or maybe I've just become numb to all the mental molesting that DW has done to my brain.
Little known fact to 'normal' people, apparently the Sensorites are distantly related to the Ood.
Can you see the family resemblance? I noticed this fact aloud, and the fount of DW trivia sitting next to me confirmed said suspicions. I'm becoming a real nerd and I don't like it.
But really I think the Ood are much cooler and creepier. I happen to like the little light ball in their hands, as opposed to the silly stethoscope/monocle. You could take an Ood to a night club, but a Sensorite would flounder in the darkness. Just, FYI.
Oods also get a 10/10 in their costume design. Beg pardon, but who has ever looked good in a one piece jumper?
There's a large bucket of entertainment in the first few chapters, which I think makes it more interesting. In short, I found it entertaining. It was in six chapters, which could have easily been cut in half, but I have no say in that whatsoever. I can only grimace and bear it.
A pattern is emerging with these episodes, depending on who is writing them. They either land in a different time period and meet deeply pathologically disturbed humans, or they land on some strange planet, and meet some deeply pathologically disturbed aliens. Take your pick, which do you prefer? I've found the historical episodes a little on the boring side, and the ones about aliens a tad higher on the entertainment scale.
Okay, here's my pet peeve of the day, and of course it's about Susan. Why is she telepathic, precious?
I should probably write more about the plot and it's only been a couple days since I've seen it, but I've already forgotten most of it. It was kinda interesting, and then it sort of lost momentum towards the end. They seem to rush about in the last episode and it doesn't always make sense to me. That's bad.
I think it's time to mention this. Several times there has been a passing comment about Susan's love for food. The Doctor insinuated that Susan likes to eat too much, and Barbara and Ian mention how Susan 'loves to eat'. So, let's give the most neurotic teenage girl alive: an eating disorder! This show gets better and better.
However, some juicy tidbits from this episode include...
Ian getting poisoned, and receiving a miraculous cure:
A guy running around acting slightly like a paranoid schizophrenic:
Particularly stupid looking props:
Lots and lots of dialogue from the Doctor:
Next up: The Reign of Terror
