10.1 The Three Doctors

What a fun way to start off Season Ten!  I saw this one a long time ago, before I started watching the Doctor Who classics, so I didn't really get much out of it.  This time around, my nerdiness was satisfied at the appearance of the three Doctors.  This is the first time they have brought all the Doctors together, so I'm sure it was big news at the time.

After seeing all the Doctors together, I still think that Troughton is the best Doctor of the three.  His personality and energy really shines in the movie.  Pertwee seemed subdued next to him.  Of course I acknowledge that Pertwee has defined the Doctor's personality in a different way compared to Troughton and Hartnell, but Troughton just seems more interesting. They managed to insert all the things that made Troughton famous, such as the recorder, the phrase "Oh my giddy aunt", and the jelly babies.

Hartnell was very ill at the time, so we're lucky that he was in it at all.  You could tell that he wasn't his old self, though, and that made me sad.  He made the Doctor beloved by viewers, and it was hard to see him not in his full Doctor personality.  Troughton just made me smile!  It was strange seeing him in color, though.  In some ways he seemed different, as I was used to him in black and white.  His outfit stood out more and I kept studying his hair, too.  My expert viewer said that it was not a wig.

The Time Lords are being attacked by another Time Lord, called Omega.  He is draining all the Time Lord's energy where he resides which is on the other side of the universe on the other side of some black hole.  That's doesn't make any sense to me.

Anyway, the Time Lords don't know what to do except send the Doctor to fix the problem.  Only, they realize that the Doctor can't fix it on his own, so they send him his other forms to help each other.  Of course Troughton and Pertwee's personalities clash, and much arguing ensues.  They then send Hartnell to put the other two in their place.  I appreciated the comedy in this.  Doctor Who is often humorless and dark, much to my dislike, and it's nice to have some comedy here and there.

There is a strange organism wandering about U.N.I.T., terrorizing and eating things.  I have several of those in my house.  Oh no! Not Bessie!  There goes Bessie!

This is the first time that Benton and the Brigadier step foot in the TARDIS. I forgot that they've never been in it before.  You think they would have seen the inside by Season Ten.  Have you felt that they've made the Brigadier more like an idiot?  It seems that he is often informing the Doctor that he is confused about what is really going on.  I felt that he was a much more competent leader in the earlier ones.  In this, he seemed clueless and fumbling.

So, this is another Time Lord who has gone berserk, and is creating havoc in the universe.  I'm not getting a good impression of the Time Lords. We have yet to meet one who is actually normal and nice.  Omega created the super nova that gives the Time Lords power, but he got stuck there and the Time Lords haven't bothered to get him out.  Unfortunately he's been there for so long, that his body no longer exists. He's never noticed this before? When he's brushing his teeth after breakfast some morning, wouldn't he have observed, "Oh, my head is missing."?  Or does he just sleep in that outfit all day and every day?

I really don't know how they fixed everything, but they had to destroy Omega in the process which was very sad. Poor Omega.  They also had to use the 2nd Doctor's recorder, which was funny.

The Doctors used their telepathy to communicate.  We've known the Doctor was telepathic, but they used it quite a bit here.

In the end, as a thank you gift, the Time Lords restore the use of the TARDIS, so now the Doctor is free to travel wherever he wishes.  How awesome is that!?
