10.2 Carnival of Monsters

This was very, very, very strange, and yet surprisingly entertaining.  This is the first time that the Doctor has opportunity to travel through space, and yet he lands on a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean.  Of course, he really hasn't landed back on Earth. He, Jo and the people on the ship are stuck inside a miniscope, an alien machine used to provide entertainment.  Of course there are monsters running amok.  The Doctor is familiar with these miniscopes, and made it his mission to get them abolished.  Therefore, he's unhappy to be stuck in one.

Because the characters in the miniscope are being manipulated, the people on the ship are acting strangely.  They repeat the same behavior, according to the whims of Vorg, who is operating the miniscope.  Vorg has landed on the planet Inter Minor, and is dealing with the officials of the planet who are suspicious of his presence and his miniscope.  "It's a cultural thing," could be applied to their suspicions.  They find Vorg's culture and ways foreign, and are therefore wary of his presence.

The three officials are rather amusing, as they argue about what should be done with Vorg.  They want to destroy the miniscope, which provides the suspense in the story.  The Doctor and Jo could easily die by the hands of the officials.

I think this could have been interesting without the monsters, but my expert viewer thought the plot would have been more tedious without an added 'danger' element.  He's probably right.

You know I didn't like Jo Grant, but I like her now.  She's a competent companion, albeit a bit naïve, but she gets things done.  She doesn't sit around crying in her soup, or screaming for help.  In fact she often has good ideas, and even suggests things when the Doctor seems uncertain.  She's reliable, and can get out of scrapes entirely on her own.

Thank goodness that the Doctor mentions that he can't use the sonic screwdriver on a regular door lock, because it only works on electronic locks. Explain that one to Matt Smith and David Tennant.

I thought the Doctor looked good in that green jacket!
