11.1 The Time Warrior

I've always liked the Sontarans in the new series, so it was fun to see when they were originally introduced.  I found this story very entertaining.  A lone Sontaran has crashed his spaceship in the Middle Ages, much to his disgust.  The people in this time are primitive, and he needs special materials and scientists to fix his ship.  So he kidnaps scientists and steals materials from the Doctor's time.  In exchange for their assistance, the Sontaran gives more advanced weapons to Irongron and his people from the Middle Ages.

I actually liked the look of this Sontaran, compared to the newer ones.  I think he looks more like a battle scarred warrior.

The Sontaran hypnotizes the scientists into helping him fix his ship.  You know how I hate mind control/hypnotism.  It doesn't work on the blind guy, though.

We meet the Doctor's new companion, Sarah Jane Smith.  She's a reporter, pretending to be a scientist, so she can get the inside scoop.  She doesn't know who the Doctor really is, so that is interesting. She stows away on the Doctor's TARDIS when he chases after the Sontaran. She ends up rather on her own.  She seems very sure of herself, and I don't know if I like her right now.

In exchange for his assistance, the Sontaran is creating an ultimate fighting machine that Irongron and his men can use to take over the country and become king.  The robot knight that he creates is the lamest excuse for a warrior.  All it does is walk stiffly and chop it's sword in one direction.  I would have made it shoot atomic bombs, with flames shooting out its hands or something.  Even Irongron thinks it's the lamest killing machine.

The Doctor rescues the scientists and the Sontaran is killed before he can leave in his machine.  I didn't like this ending.  I felt it was unnecessary to kill him off.
