9.3 The Sea Devils
He's BACK!!! The Master is imprisoned in a high security prison, with guards who are trained to resist his mind control. A minefield surrounds the prison island for good measure. You want him to be sitting around counting his toes, but really the Master always has something going on up his billowing sleeves. [Does he dress like that every day?] He says that he is a good boy now, but the Doctor doesn't believe him.
This must have been an expensive endeavor. The royal navy was involved, and we see the use of a ship, a submarine and a hovercraft. Interestingly, U.N.I.T. does not make an appearance in this, except that the Doctor and Jo represent U.N.I.T..
The Sea Devils are related to the Silurians, except that the Sea Devils live in water and not the Earths' core. I'm not sure why they are called Sea Devils. Surely there's a better name. Technically the Silurians should not be called Silurians, as the Doctor pointed out.
We got to witness an epic sword battle between the Doctor and the Master. I was really rooting for the Master. His plans keep going awry thanks to the Doctor and U.N.I.T., so I can't blame all his pent-up rage and frustration. Of course the Doctor wins the fight, and in the end the Master throws a knife at his back in a petulant fit. How cowardly is that! You never fight someone when their back is turned! That's fighting etiquette 101. Anyway, he misses which I don't really know how that happens, other than to create a cliffhanger for the following week's episode.
What's the Master up to this time 'round? He is using the Sea Devils to create an army to take over the planet. Wait a minute. Hasn't he attempted this before? He likes to create minions to do his bidding, in vain attempts to take over the world. You'd think he'd realize by now that this ultimate plan of his has never worked. Something always goes wrong.
The Doctor uses the sonic screwdriver a few times. Mainly he uses it to explode the mines in the minefield. Isn't that clever of him. He also throws his body across the barbed wire so Jo can step over it and him. That's sooooooooooo heroic.
The Doctor does attempt to make peace with the Sea Devils, which is awesome. He has contempt for humans, but he has an understanding for the down trodden aliens that cross his path. His plans to make peace go awry when the humans and the Master get involved.
It's funny that the Master needs the Doctor's help to build the machine that will revive all the Sea Devils across the planet. The Master isn't the brightest bulb on Gallifrey apparently. The Doctor sabotages the machine, turning it into a bomb that eradicates all the Sea Devils in that area. The Doctor and the Master escape. In the end the Master pulls his double trick, and escapes in the hovercraft. Is this the end of the Master?
The Sea Devils are wearing fishing nets because they look 'suggestive' without them. I am intrigued. Let's see what they look like underneath!
The Doctor ate all the sandwiches without letting Jo have any. That was rude! He's so rude!
