10.5 The Green Death

Mining is never a good thing in Doctor Who.  It isn't.  The Doctor is back with U.N.I.T., which I think is really strange.  He is staying on Earth, even though he doesn't need to.  Why is that?  Does he have an affection for U.N.I.T. and Jo, that he won't admit?

I think this episode was rather dated.  The awareness of environmental issues, such as pollution, was a major issue at the time that this episode aired.  The statements made by Professor Jones echoed what most people were saying at the time.

More crystals.

Don't touch the slime. It will turn you green.  Do you get the impression that this was designed for the children viewers?

The giant maggots looked quite realistic, I thought.

The fly, however, gets an F----

The Doctor is in a couple different disguises, which reminded me of the Troughton days.

Does the supercomputer remind me of WOTAN?  Actually I thought his voice sounded like the Master's, but it wasn't.  I was afraid that the Master was behind this.  My expert viewer told me that Robert Delgado had died in a car accident, so he will no longer appear in Doctor Who.  That is tragic.  I will miss him!

Well actually the supercomputer's name is BOSS.  They worked really hard to make that acronym.  I like WOTAN better.  Have I mentioned how much I hate mind control? They do a lot of that in this episode.

The fungus that Professor Jones is what kills off the maggots. That was rather amusing.  Mushrooms kill maggots!  That's right, kids, eat your mushrooms because they saved the world.

Nice car, Brigadier!

What is with her Jane Austen dress?

Jo and the Professor fall in love.  Actually, it really wasn't much of a love story. Jones spent a lot of time yelling at Jo for the accidents that she was unintentionally causing in his lab.  He also mocks her naïve attitude about everything.  Do you think that's an abusive relationship waiting to happen? Won't her name be Jo Jones?

The Doctor is very sad that Jo is leaving.  I think he took her for granted.  Now he's just a loser, with a TARDIS.  His loneliness seems to be emphasized, which reminds me of the newer Doctors who are lonely because everyone leaves them in the end.

Now that Jo Grant has left, who is next?

Next Up: The Time Warrior
